Un grupo de científicos de Estados Unidos estableció una nueva medida contra el coronavirus , el control de la humedad relativa.
A esta altura de la pandemia todas las personas conocen las medidas más básicas para hacerle frente al coronavirus. Entre ellas, lavarse las manos, ventilación de interiores, mascarilla y distanciamiento social. Sin embargo, a aparecido una nueva medida preventiva para evitar el contagio de virus.
Comunicado de la nueva medida contra el coronavirus
Joseph G. Allen, profesor de la Universidad de Harvard; Akiko Iwasaki, profesora de inmunobiología en la Facultad de Medicina de Yale, y Linsey C. Marr profesora de ingeniería civil y ambiental en Virginia Tech emitieron un comunicado en el Washington Post. En el cual, se anunció la invitación a las personas a mantener la humedad relativa en el rango de 40% al 60%.
Los científicos se encargaron de explicar que es la humedad relativa. Se define como la cantidad de vapor de agua que existe realmente en aire en comparación con la cantidad que puede contener.
Explicación de cómo funciona esta nueva medida
Piense en ello como una esponja: al 100%, la esponja está totalmente empapada; al 50%, contiene la mitad de agua. El aire más cálido puede contener más vapor de agua; es como una esponja más grande”, indican.
Así que, cuando llega el invierno y empezamos a calentar el aire, los ambientes interiores se vuelven más secos, normalmente al 20% de humedad relativa. La cual es una cantidad muy baja en relación con la humedad relativa recomendada de 40 a 60% como nueva medida contra el coronavirus.
Estudios demuestra como el virus se descompone en una humedad relativa de 60%
Los expertos indican que la humedad ataca a la transmisión del virus de diferentes formas. Como por ejemplo, la influencia que posee para que nuestro cuerpo combata las infecciones.
También, explicaron que una investigación muestra como el virus se descompone con mayor rapidez en una humedad relativa cerca de 60% que en otros niveles. Sin embargo, ese informe no ha sido evaluado por los expertos.
Los expertos señalan que la humedad afecta a la transmisión del virus de varias formas. Por ejemplo, influye en la capacidad de nuestro cuerpo para combatir las infecciones.
Además, explican que un nuevo estudio muestra que el coronavirus se descompone más rápido con una humedad relativa cercana al 60% que en otros niveles, aunque matizan que ese informe todavía no ha sido revisado por expertos.
Por otra parte, confirman que el aire seco también interviene en la distancia en que pueden viajar gotas que contienen virus y en su duración en el aire. De hecho, cuando más aja es la humedad relativa, más rápido se evaporan las gotas.
Inconvenientes de un nivel del 40 al 60%
“El resultado es que muchas de esas gotas más grandes que se habrían asentado en el aire se convierten en más pequeñas. Por lo tanto, viajan más lejos y penetran más profundamente en nuestros pulmones”, señalan.
“Si una humedad más alta es buena, ¿por qué no queremos superar el 60%? El crecimiento de moho. Un nivel del 40 al 60% está justo en el punto óptimo donde obtenemos los beneficios de un poco de humedad, pero no los inconvenientes de demasiada”, explican los científicos.
Ellos mismos admiten que controlar la humedad en la mayoría de los edificios públicos o comerciales es complicado. Pero insisten en que en casa se pueden usar humidificadores portátiles para aumentar la humedad relativa en una habitación.
“Por ejemplo, un estudio sobre la transmisión de la gripe concluyó que el uso de humidificadores portátiles en el hogar podría provocar hasta un 30% menos de supervivencia de ese virus”, enfatizan.
